Daughters of the Delta Opens in the Roger D Malkin Gallery

GREENVILLE, Miss--The Greenville Arts Council announces the opening of
their first exhibit of the year in the Roger D. Malkin Gallery. On
January 13, 2012 Daughters of the Delta will open with a reception
from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM. All are welcome to attend the opening. This
exhibit will showcase three female painters from the Delta; Katie
Virden Byrd, Elizabeth Barenis and Shelby Hall Nunnery.
“This year we will showcase a variety of artists diverse in medium and
subject matter. We are looking forward to our first exhibit where we
are featuring three local female artists. Our gallery openings are
free and open to the public; a great time to take in some great art
and fellowship,” stated MacKenzie Stroh, Executive Director of the
Greenville Arts Council.
Katie Virden Byrd is a graduate of St. Joseph High School and received
a bachelor and masters in Art Education from Delta State University.
She taught High School Art at East Side High School in Cleveland, MS
and recently began teaching at East Side and Parks Elementary in
Cleveland, MS. She is a board member of Delta Arts Alliance and a
member of Delta Artists Association. Byrd has exhibited her work in
various locations throughout the Delta including Cleveland, Leland,
Greenville, Mississippi and Lake Village, Arkansas.
Born in the heart of the Mississippi Delta in 1982, Elizabeth Barenis
has been artistically-driven since childhood. Her college life began
in Miami, Florida, and quickly moved to a smaller, more artistic
setting at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, where she
earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. She has studied painting at
Chautauqua School of Art and has been an Artist-in-Residence for the
VSA Arts of Mississippi. In July of 2009, the Mississippi Arts
Commission awarded Barenis a Visual Arts Fellowship Grant to fund the
creation of a new body of work. Her series, "Nina's Roles," is a
collection of four, 36"x36" acrylic paintings, which demonstrates the
work which stemmed from the grant. In May of 2010, Barenis traveled to
Harrisonburg, Virginia, to showcase two of her paintings in a juried
art show at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community.
Shelby Hall Nunnery graduated from Washington School in 2002 and
attended Delta State University. While at DSU she obtained a degree in
Art Education. In 2010, her work was exhibited at Hob Nob in Leland,
Mississippi and at Guachoya Art Center in Lake Village Arkansas.
Nunnery’s paintings focus on the landscapes that make up her home. She
is also a member of the Delta Artists Association.
